When Coach “Lefty” Driesell became the Head Coach of Maryland Basketball, he fore saw the need to create a support group that could establish a loyal following for the team, and to help raise needed funds. In 1971 the “Fastbreakers” were created by Jack “Mr. Maryland” Heise and Les Smith to help Coach Driesell fulfill his vision.

More than 40 years later,the Fastbreakers continue with its original mission as charged by Coach Driesell. Through the years, Maryland Basketball has reached great heights including the 2002 National Championship under Coach Gary Williams. Now entering the B1G Ten under the leadership of Coach Mark Turgeon.

The Fastbreakers assist the men’s basketball team by providing needed financial resources and fostering outreach through our many popular club events..

The Fastbreakers is an official athletic team support group recognized by the University of Maryland Department of Athletics. The Fastbreakers contribute to the development and maintenance of the highly successful Maryland Terrapins men's basketball program.

All Terrapin Club members are eligible to join the Fastbreakers.
